Starting Xi Szemik Saez And Mengwen All Make Debuts For Womens Team

The Guardian

Starting XI | Szemik, Sáez and Mengwen all make debuts for women's team

Szemik makes her senior debut in goal for the Blues

Ella Szemik deputised in goal for the injured Sophie Baggaley in the Blues’ 3-2 victory over Championship side London City Lionesses. The 17-year-old shot=stopper, who has been with the Club since the age of eight, made a string of fine saves to help earn the win and secure City’s place in the next round of the Continental Cup.

Sáez starts her first game since returning to the Club

Vicky Losada’s return to the Club, following her summer switch to Manchester City, meant that another Spanish midfielder made her first start for the Blues. Lola Sáez began the season in impressive form for her country at the Euros and was handed her first start for Gareth Taylor’s side against London City. The midfielder went close to scoring with a rasping shot from distance that narrowly cleared the bar.

Mengwen handed her full debut

Another player who enjoyed a summer on international duty, although not with such a positive outcome, was Aoife Mannion. The defender was part of the Republic of Ireland side that were narrowly beaten by Ukraine in their World Cup play-off semi-final. With Mannion having missed City’s pre-season, due to her international commitments, Gareth Taylor gave a debut to 16-year-old Mengwen Yu at left-back. The Chinese teenager was a constant threat to the visitors down the left flank and linked up well with Jess Park on the wing.
